Make your answer the one Google and AI tools quote
AEO, answer engine optimization, means your words become the answer: the featured snippet, the People Also Ask reply, or the passage an AI answer quotes. We collect the questions your customers really ask, then make sure your pages answer each one clearly, accurately and first, with the facts to back it up.
What is AEO?
AEO is being the quoted answer. When someone asks Google a question, it may show a featured snippet (a short answer at the top), a People Also Ask box of related questions, or an AI Overview. ChatGPT and Perplexity also quote passages from web pages. AEO makes your page the clearest source for those answers. In plain English: your words become the answer.
The label is new. The idea isn’t: write the clearest answer to a real question, and make it easy to find.
How AI answers work
- A customer asks“Who handles DUI cases in Mesa?”
- AI engines look for an answer
- ChatGPT
- Perplexity
- Gemini
- Google AI Overviews
- They read sources
- Your website
- Reviews
- Business listings
- Directories
- The answer names a fewA few businesses get named, and the customer picks from them
Why does AEO matter for a local business?
Because customers ask questions before they call, book or visit:
- “How much does it cost to replace a water heater in Phoenix?”
- “Do I have to sign a buyer agreement before touring homes?”
- “Does your clinic see rabbits?”
If your page answers clearly, Google and AI tools can quote it, often with your name and a link beside it. If a competitor’s page answers better, theirs gets quoted.
How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?
They overlap. SEO gets your pages ranked. AEO shapes what’s on those pages so an answer can be lifted out and quoted. GEO works on what the wider web says about you, so AI tools name your business. Most of the work helps all three.
What do you do for AEO?
- Collect real questions (Quinn): from you first (what callers, clients or patients ask), then Search Console, Google’s People Also Ask boxes, reviews and local Reddit threads. We gather 40 to 80, then cut to the ones that matter for sales.
- Sort them by intent: choosing, cost, process, urgent (“what do I do after…”), logistics (hours, parking, delivery) and trust.
- Give each question a home: the service, treatment or practice-area page that should own it. No thin page per question.
- Write the answers (Penn): the question as a heading in your customers’ words, a direct answer in the first 40 to 60 words, then the detail as steps, lists or tables.
- Use specific facts: fees and prices as you state them, hours, places, brands, licenses. Nothing invented.
- Mark it up (Sage): structured data that matches what’s on the page.
- Do the valuable ones first: questions that bring paying customers, where you don’t appear yet, go to the top of the list.
What do you need from me?
- The questions customers ask you, in their words: from calls, emails, DMs or the front counter.
- Facts in writing: fees, prices, services, brands, licenses, hours, and anything you never want said.
- Search Console access by invite, so we can see the questions you already show up for.
- Sign-off on drafts. For law firms, a lawyer at the firm reviews every page. For dental, med spa and vet practices, a dentist, your medical director or a vet approves anything about treatment.
How do you measure AEO?
- Which of your target questions show your page as the featured snippet or a People Also Ask answer, checked by hand a few searches at a time.
- Whether Google’s AI Overview for those questions cites your page.
- Whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini quote or cite your page in Otto’s monthly AI check.
- Search Console impressions and clicks for question searches.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO just SEO with a new name?
Partly. Experts disagree on where SEO ends and AEO begins. The practical difference is focus: AEO starts from the exact questions customers ask and builds pages so each answer can stand on its own. We don’t sell it as separate magic.
Will FAQ schema get my questions shown as dropdowns in Google?
No. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search from May 7, 2026. We still add FAQ markup to real question-and-answer sections because it helps machines read them, but we don’t sell it as a search feature.
Do I need a separate FAQ page?
Usually not. A question about fees belongs on the page about that service. A separate FAQ page makes sense only for general questions, like parking or payment, that don’t fit anywhere else.
Should I write for AI or for people?
People. Google says no special optimizations are needed to appear in its AI features, and writing for machines tends to read badly. Clear headings, direct answers and specific facts help readers and AI tools alike.
How many questions will you answer?
We research 40 to 80 per client, then focus on the ones that bring paying customers. Most become sections on pages you already have.
